Frequently Asked Questions
What usually happens in the first session?
We will start a conversation about who you are and your reason for coming to therapy. The therapist will ask you some questions to better understand your current concerns about other life experiences, to help build an understanding of the challenges you face, underlying issues and ways to make positive change.
How many sessions will I need?
It really depends on your reason for coming to therapy and what you are aiming to achieve. We will talk together in the first session about how many sessions might be a good start. Some people find seeing a therapist once or twice is helpful, others commit to a block of treatment, for example six to ten sessions, other people find it helpful to engage with a therapist longer term, and over a number of years.
There is value in giving therapy a chance and taking a number of sessions to get to know the therapist and to explore and experiment with the ideas and strategies offered to you.
Can a family member come too?
You’re welcome to bring other people to therapy, however if you are wanting to work on individual matters it is helpful to have a private space just for you. If you want to talk about whether you are seeking individual therapy or therapy for you and people in your family complete the enquiry form to get in touch.
Why would I pay to see a therapist – isn’t it just like having a chat?
People often say it can be helpful to talk to a neutral qualified professional who can provide perspectives different from friends, family or work colleagues. A mental health professional can provide their expertise and offer strategies and ideas while also respecting that you are the expert in your own life.
How long does a session go for?
Sessions usually go for 50 minutes.

How do I obtain a Mental Health Care Plan?
You might be able to obtain a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) by seeing your GP and developing a treatment plan together. A MHCP is available if you have a clinically diagnosed mental disorder. This will entitle you to claim a rebate for up to twenty individual sessions and possibly ten group sessions in a calendar year. After the first 6 sessions, you will need to see your doctor again for a mental health treatment plan review and another referral.
I’m a young person and my parent/s want me to attend. Do they come to the session too?
This is a good question and really depends on what you as the young person are wanting. Sometimes young people prefer to have private sessions on their own, other times young people choose to invite parents to be a part of the session. We would talk about this together and can speak over the phone first if you want, before you come to a session.
